Choosing The Perfect Bird Cage For Your Canary

Canaries are passerine birds that are commonly bred in captivity. They are small in size and fly horizontally. This probably explains the shape of their beak. They generally hop on the ground and therefore when buying cages for canaries, their lifestyle has to be kept in mind. Canary bird cages should not be tall or narrow as this might restrict their movement. Instead buying cages that are broader will help the bird in its flight. So when you head out to buy a canary bird cage, keep the following tips in mind:

Pay attention to the size of the cage. It is recommended to have a cage with a minimum width of 20 inches but cage having a width 24 inches or more is preferable.

The cage must have a perch on either side. This allows you to place the feeders, water bowls, etc inside the cage. These perches allow your bird to move back and forth giving it much needed exercise.

The bars of the cage should be at least half an inch apart. Remember that canary birds are quite small and can easily slip out if the bars are too wide apart from each other.

Pay attention to the shape of the cage. Do not buy round shaped cages. They may look cute but are not ideal for canaries. These birds are most comfortable in corners, so buying a rectangle shaped cage would be ideal to make your bird feel secure and happy.

The material of the cage is crucial for your bird’s survival. Canary birds are very sensitive to chemicals, smoke, paints, deodorizers, or any other strong smelling odor. Cages made out of wood (not varnished), bamboo or metal is suitable.

The hormones of a canary bird are regulated by light and thus proper lighting of the cage is essential for your bird’s health. So, keep these points in mind next time you look for a cheap bird cage.
