Animals as Prizes?

While there are many things that make good prizes animals is not one of them. Alice Wright agrees with me: Keith Lemon recently gave away a Pug puppy to a winning child on his show Lemonaid, which I and plenty of other dog-owners think is rather irresponsible. The show has racked up over 200 Ofcom complaints and a couple of protesting Facebook pages as well as plenty of calls to the RSPCA! It also prompted various animal charities and bodies to respond. The Kennel Club said they were “extremely disappointed” and “Puppies are not commodities but are a lifelong commitment.” The Dogs Trust said they were “shocked and disappointed”. Going on to say: “It is highly inappropriate to promote the frivolous gifting of dogs in this fashion and we are concerned that viewers may follow suit without giving any thought to the life-long commitment that dogs command… his poor attempt [...] Read more »

Pit Bull

Another Day, Another Pit Bull Bylaw

If you’re planning on travelling to Cudahy, Wisconsin you may want to leave your Pit Bull at home. As reported on HERE they have instituted a pretty tough bylaw pertaining to Pit Bulls. “Dangerous animals occasionally escape from the yard or building in which they are kept, by slipping under a fence, jumping over a fence, slipping through a door or gate temporarily opened or unlatched, breaking the leash or chain, or pulling up the anchor for the chain or leash. Children too young to read may wander too close to an animal….It is the policy of this City that children and others should not have to assume the risk of a dangerous animal having an opportunity to attack or to kill. The …benefits to an animal owner in owning a dangerous animal are outweighed by dangers to children and to [the] general public.” The Cudahy definition of “dangerous animal” [...] Read more »

St. Bernard

Dog Dies Saving Family

Nana, a two year old St. Bernard perished in a fire after alerting it’s family members and saving their lives. The fire happened just outside of Jamestown in an 1819 farmhouse once owned by a well-known local artist. Known as the Koffin House, the home had belonged to the Petscher family for more than four years. On Jan. 17, after a day spent at the house with relatives, Petscher’s oldest daughter fell asleep on the living room couch. Petscher, who was recovering from minor surgery himself, couldn’t carry the 6-year-old upstairs and decided to sleep downstairs with her instead. It was cold outside, so despite knowing better, he piled a few logs onto the fireplace fire and drifted off. “It had been four years, and we’d never had an issue,” he said. “I guess I got complacent.” The family had smoke detectors in the house, he said, and their oldest [...] Read more »

Connecting Pets and Owners across the Globe

Due to the very advanced technology that we have nowadays, it is not impossible to note that previously slow or unthinkable ways of connecting people are being invented and even renewed almost every day. For example, the first invention that connected people across the globe was the telephone. Next was e-mail, the cellular phone, social networking sites, and Skype…to name a few. You will lose count as to which came next since, as I have said earlier, almost every day new items are appearing, some upgraded, others completely new. However, have you heard that Skype can also be used by their owners in checking their beloved pets even from afar? In a first for Australia, Hanrob Pet Hotels will today launch PetSkype so owners can make a video call to talk to and interact with their pets. See? Even the famous Skype is now being used as a communication tool [...] Read more »

Drug Cartels using Horses as Drug Mules

Have you ever heard the term for people transporting illegal drugs? Mules or drug mules is the term. Drug syndicates use drug mules to transport illicit substances to different places without raising the suspicion of the authorities and they are pretty good at it. It seems they are always coming up with new methods to try and sneak the stuff across borders. It’s not all that uncommon for us to hear about stories of how these drug mules hide these illicit substances in places we would never have imagined. One recent incident shows the cartels will stop at nothing to transport their poison. A police dog alerted the authorities to the suspicious cargo, according to the Daily Mirror, but it wasn’t until closer inspection when vets were called in that hundreds of thousands of pounds were found rolled up and hidden in the animal’s backsides. This is seriously a criminal [...] Read more »
