I love and hate to travel at the same time. I get to enjoy new spots and sceneries but it makes me sad as I don’t want to leave my pet pooch at home alone. 
What to do? When I found out that I can take him with me on my vacations, I was so ecstatic. If you want to experience the same enjoyment with your pet, you might want to take note of the tips in this post.
Don’t be stressed out when you are about to travel with your faithful companion by air. The tips below can help you.
• Airlines require a different set of ticket for your dog. As much as possible, book a flight that is non-stop. In addition, choose a time when the weather is not extreme (neither too hot nor too cold) to avoid discomfort on your pet’s part.
• If you have a small dog then you are lucky since you don’t have to part with him throughout the flight. You can fit him inside a soft-sided carrier. Just make sure that your dog stays inside his carrier for the whole flight. If you want, you can have him wear a diaper for dogs.
• If you have a large dog, you have no choice but to place him in the cargo area. For this, you will need a hard-sided crate or carrier. This carrier should be big enough for him to stand and move a little. You might want to train him ahead of time if he is not crate-trained. To make your dog feel comfortable, add blankets and toys.
• Have your dog checked by your vet one week before your flight. Ask for a health certification for a proof that your dog is fit to travel. This is important as the airline might check for this document.
• You can ask for a sedative for your pooch. However, I am sure this will not be easy for you. The important thing is that you prepared for anything that might happen. Remember that flights can be stressful for your dogs so it helps to be geared up. Aside from a sedative, bring with your important data like your vet’s number and your pet’s latest picture.
• Check your dog’s crate before sending it to cargo. It should be securely or tightly locked. Write your contact information on your dog’s id tag and stickers inside and outside the crate.
• Be generous when it comes to your crate or baggage handler. Make him or her happy with your tip so you are sure that he takes care of your pooch too.
• As soon as you get on the plane, inform a flight attendant about your pet.
• Usually, your pet’s crate will be in the oversize baggage section. Most likely, pet crates are unloaded last so be patient. The important thing is that your dog arrives safe with you.
