Deciding about purchasing a puppy collar is almost the same as that of choosing one for a bigger dog. There are only a few differences and considerations to make such as the
main concern with collar size knowing that the puppy will eventually grow bigger.
Collars should fit well on pet dogs. Growing pets need collars that can be adjusted as they grow bigger. It’s advisable that you invest on several collars to make sure they fit right and keep the puppy safe.
Dog collars should neither be too tight nor too loose. This will prevent the collar from slipping off or make it hard for the pet to breathe. One way to know if the collar properly fits is if you can still slip some of your fingers between the collar and the puppy’s neck.
Choose a dog collar with short straps. Dogs like to chew on things and if their collar has a long strap that sticks out, they might chew on it. If you have purchased a collar with a long strap you may cut it shorter but make sure it’s shortened down to the right size.
Since puppies are still small it is recommended that you choose a thin and light collar for them to use. A heavy collar will not make the puppy feel comfortable while adjusting to wearing it. So choose something light like a soft nylon dog collar that will make it easy for the puppy to breathe while wearing it.
Some pets may find it difficult to adjust to pet collars and may try to take them off. This can be prevented by fastening the collar securely. Using harnesses will also make the job easier for you as it’s difficult to take off but doesn’t put too much pressure on your pet’s neck. One thing you need to keep checking on, though, is to make sure the puppy doesn’t chew on the harness. Puppy collars should also be checked regularly especially if the puppy is growing fast. By doing this, you can be sure the collar is not worn down and still fits the dog properly. Moreover, it will also keep the puppy healthy and happy while the dog owner feels satisfied and convenient.
