There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the best kennel flooring for your outdoor kennel. There are many different types of kennel flooring available
and what you end up choosing will probably depend on how much money you have to spend on it, what is available in your area and where it will be installed. No matter what type of kennel flooring you choose, there are a few things to keep in mind on which any flooring you choose should have.
What To Look For When Choosing Kennel Flooring
Ease of Installation: A plus no matter what you are buying is that it is easy to install. Look for flooring that is easy to install. Ideally it should be bought in sections that can simply be placed together.
Stain and Odor Resistance: As much as you try to keep your dog kennel clean there will undoubtedly be accidents of one kind or another from time to time. Thus it is important that you purchase flooring that is made from a material that is odor and stain resistant. Or, if it is not, that you can treat it with something so that it can be. This is also important if your kennels are close to your house, or close to your neighbors!
Resilient: Dogs can be very hard on their kennels and kennel flooring. Nails will scratch surfaces, dogs will try to chew on flooring if they can get a piece of it into their mouth, and they tend to jump around and play quite roughly at times. Make sure that the flooring you choose will be able to survive your dog’s antics.
Self-Draining: It is ideal if your kennel flooring is self-draining. That way you will not find puddles or other messes left on the kennel floor.
Portable: Depending on the size of your kennel you may want to be able to move it around your yard at times. Perhaps due to weather conditions or the angle of the sun in a certain season one location is better than another. If you set your kennel on your lawn you may want to move the kennel from time to time so you do not kill off the grass underneath. If you do need to move your kennel around it is obviously essential that your flooring is also portable.
Raised Flooring: It is much better for your dog to sleep, and rest, up off the ground. While you can lay rubber mats directly on the ground, it is preferable that your flooring is at least a few inches off the ground. This will keep your dog warmer and drier and it will also allow air circulation underneath the flooring.
These are all things to keep in mind when you are shopping for kennel flooring. Something like kennel decking meets all of these requirements quite well, and it is fairly inexpensive to buy.
