Using a Dog Pen to Train Your Pet
Everyone knows that dogs need training. By teaching them to sit, come and walk to heel you can ensure that it is safe to take them out on walks and visit friends and relatives. However, a dog pen can help with other aspects of dog training.
Many people buy a small dog play pen for a new puppy which can be kept in the house and is very useful for different aspects of house training. Firstly, the pen will stop a young dog from chewing the furniture and other items found around the house. If you put a good selection of toys into the pen and spend time playing with them with your dog then he will come to recognize them as his own. Then, once you’ve let him out of the pen, whenever he attempts to chew a household item you can firmly say ‘no’ and give him one of those toys to play with. He will soon realize that there are certain things which can and can’t be chewed and played with.
Put a dog kennel somewhere within the indoor dog pen and your puppy will see the whole area as his own personal den. This is useful because dogs naturally want to keep their den clean and so he will do his best to wait until you take him elsewhere before he goes to the toilet. Give him lots of praise when he does his business outside so that he is clear about what you expect.
Outdoor dog pens can help you to train your dog to be separated from you for periods of time, reducing incidences of separation anxiety. Put the dog into his pen, with lots of toys, and spend time outside doing some gardening or relaxing. Gradually start spending a bit of time where he can’t see you and gradually increase this time. By making the pen a fun and comfortable place to be your dog will soon be happy to go there when you are away from home.
