Taking Care of a Pet Rabbit

Rabbits are good pets for children if you want to teach them about responsibility and caring for another living being. They are not as hard to look after as something like a dog or cat, yet they will still require a routine of daily maintenance. Just be aware that rabbits can live up to seven years in captivity, so that means you should be fully prepared for this long term commitment. Be ready to buy all the food and supplies it might take to keep a rabbit happy for this amount of time. And if you can’t, or foresee that it will be too big of a burden, then you really shouldn’t get a rabbit in the first place.

One important thing to remember about rabbits is that they are social animals, but they much prefer the company of other rabbits to humans. So that means you might get a rabbit that prefers not to be touched or cuddled. If this is the case then you should make sure to respect the rabbit’s privacy and let it be alone when it wants.

Never grab a rabbit too tightly or hold it by its back or ears. Rabbits are resilient but they are also fragile when treated improperly. And don’t try to train your rabbit through hitting because this will just end up scaring your bunny in the end. If it does something you don’t like such as sniffing too close to one of your shoes, then a loud clap of your hands will usually be enough to warn the bunny.

When it comes to indoor rabbit cages, you want to make sure to keep your as clean as possible. Remember that the cage will be both a home and bathroom for your rabbit, so you want to take care of messes on a daily basis. That means clearing out old hay and removing uneaten bits of fruits or vegetables. And of course the most problematic chore related to pet rabbit care is to remove all the droppings, but if you keep a regular routine then the problem won’t get too big.

And remember to let your rabbit out once in a while to play whenever you can. In time, you will be able to tell what your rabbit’s personality is like so it will be clear when it is happy and when it is not. So, in taking care of a pet rabbit, your best to maintain its safety and healthy, and your pet bunny rabbit will be a fine companion for years to come.
