Britain is a nation of pet lovers. From four legged furry friends to feathered companions and everything in between, it seems the love for pets continues.
In 2008, reptiles were deemed more popular pets to keep than dogs but the tables have turned and recent research shows that dogs have clawed their way past cats and reptilian creatures to make it to the top spot.
Dogs are officially the most popular household pet to own in Britain at present and the number of dogs in the country is at an all-time high. The number of dogs in Britain currently rests at 8.3 million compared to 5 million in 1970.
There seems to be a trend forming as smaller dogs are becoming increasingly popular, possibly linked to the fact they are less expensive to feed and take care of than larger breeds. Pedigree pooches are on the increase too as Kennel Club pedigree registration figures have increased by over 25% since 2001 to a total figure of 275,062.
Canine breeds perceived to be ‘fashionable’ are increasing as well with the number of pugs in Britain rising six-fold since 2001 and the number of Chihuahuas trebling in the same period.
Cats still remain a popular choice with 8.6 million feline pets in the UK, though this figure has dropped when compared to 9.6 million in 2004. Busy lifestyles mean cats have always been a popular choice as they require less exercise and attention than their canine counterparts.
Although reptiles and amphibians have fallen from the top spot, they still remain a popular choice as a household pet; there are around eight million being kept in British homes.
Reptiles and amphibians are easier to care for then other traditional pet species and prove to be a popular choice for anyone with an allergy to cats and dogs.
Regardless of what type of pet you own, big or small, furry or scaly, you should investigate the benefits offered by pet insurance. For a small amount each month you can buy insurance that will cover the medical care your pet may need if an accident were to occur or if they were to become ill.
Preventing Pet Insurance Claims
It goes without saying that keeping your pet in good health is one the best ways of avoiding insurance claims.
Grooming, nutrition and exercise are equally important for all types of pet and a balance of all three will result in a healthy and happy companion. If you have an exotic or unusual pet, make sure you are aware of any special requirements they may have.
Investing in a good quality pet food helps to keep your best friend ship-shape and if you do have an unusual variety of animal, don’t worry as pet insurance is generally available for most types of household pets, big or small.
