What Will They Steal Next?

A 30 yr old tortoise was stolen from The Animal Store in Lincolnwood on Saturday, and through an anonymous tip was restored to its owners within a day.

Spur is Back

The stolen tortoise Spur and his owner.

According to owner Ken Bearman, the tortoise weighed at least 70 lbs, not a lightweight, and lived in an enclosure. He found it a little odd that nothing apart from the tortoise was taken. He surmises that it was therefore a pre-planned theft, although why anyone would want to steal a 70 lb tortoise was beyond him.

The tortoise was stolen early on Saturday (July 2nd) and Ken was alerted to the fact that something untoward was going on at his pet store when he got a call from both the police as well as his security company that his alarm had tripped.

A quick look through the store showed that nothing other than Spur, which is the tortoise’s name was missing. There were also no clues as to who had done it and why as reselling a Sulcata tortoise is not one of the easiest thing in the world to do.

They didn’t have to worry for too long because within a short while they received an anonymous tip about where the tortoise could be found. It appears more like a prank by some local boys than a theft.

Ken says that Spur was a local celebrity of sorts and paid periodic visits to the local day care centers, senior centers as well as animal shows.
